Records landscape

What British Columbia publishes, by registry

Four registry families answer four different questions. A province can be excellent at one and unusable for another, and knowing which before you start is most of the skill.

Corporate registry

Which companies is this person behind?

BC Registries offers the cleanest provincial corporate search in the country, including a documented API. Name search is free and discloses directors, officers, registered and records offices, and status. For anyone building automated Canadian corporate research, BC is the connector to build first.

Court records

Has this person sued, or been sued?

Court Services Online is the single best court records resource in Canada. It provides real party-name search across the Supreme Court and Provincial Court, covering civil, criminal, and traffic matters, with full file details for roughly six dollars. Nothing in Ontario or Alberta approaches this. Note that criminal results here are court records, not a criminal record check — they show charges laid in BC courts and their disposition, which is a different artifact from an RCMP record check.

Land registry

What real property does this person own?

The Land Title and Survey Authority supports owner-name search for account holders, which is a decisive advantage over Ontario. Title searches disclose registered owners, mortgages, charges, easements, and transfer history with consideration amounts.

Personal property security

What is already pledged, and to whom?

The BC Personal Property Registry supports debtor-name and VIN search at roughly seven dollars, and is integrated with the broader BC Registries platform.

Unusually good here

What British Columbia does better than most provinces

  • Court Services Online — genuine party-name court search, civil and criminal
  • Corporate registry with a real documented API
  • Land title search by owner name
  • Coherent single platform across corporate, PPR, and other registries

Gaps and limitations

What British Columbia does not let you search

These are structural limits of the province's systems, not paywalls and not gaps in our coverage. Where one applies, the report says which courthouse or registry office a manual retrieval would need.

  • Court Services Online charges per file, so broad searches cost real money
  • BC PIPA applies instead of PIPEDA, with its own publicly-available-information rules
  • Family and youth matters are excluded from public search, as everywhere

Legal basis

Privacy law here

Searching statutory public registries and court records requires no notice to the subject — they are two of the five categories the Regulations Specifying Publicly Available Information treat as collectable without consent. See acceptable use for the purposes we decline.

Questions

British Columbia public records — common questions

Can I search BC court records by name?

Yes. Court Services Online provides party-name search across BC Supreme Court and Provincial Court for civil, criminal, and traffic matters. A full file costs roughly six dollars. This makes British Columbia the easiest province in Canada for court records research by a wide margin.

Does a BC court search show criminal records?

It shows criminal court records — charges laid in BC courts and how they were resolved. That is not the same as a criminal record check, which comes from the RCMP or a police service, requires the subject's consent, and is typically fingerprint-verified. BC court records are limited to BC and to matters that reached court, so they are neither a national nor a complete picture.

Can I find out what property someone owns in BC?

Yes. The Land Title and Survey Authority supports owner-name search for account holders, so you can ask which properties a named person holds. This is a meaningful advantage over Ontario, where no owner-name index exists.
